This time last year I was sobbing over the ridiculous trade that left the Houston Astros Troy Pattonless heading into the 2008 campaign.
Those wounds healed substantially after I heard about his torn labrum and season ending surgery...but that was only temporary. Now those scars that were left from the trade have opened once more into gaping wounds and I feel like someone just poured a full bottle of Morton's salt into my lacerations.
When I got the report that Patton was throwing a 95 mph fastball and a curveball that has been staright up foolin kids I began to think about why the Houston Astros dealt him for a mediocre short stop who could possibly be deported by May of this year. Why would you package five players in exchange for Tejada? Why would you deal away three pitchers when pitching depth is scarce already?
As Spring Training kicks off next week, the Baltimore Orioles have a great pitching prospect in camp while the Astros salivate on the offseason acquisition of Mike Hampton...the savior of the Astros rotation (Sarcasm). Patton may not be a savior to any rotation, but it sure doesn't hurt to have a talent of his magnitude waiting to get a legit shot at pitching in the Bigs.

I feel your pain. As an Oriole Fan it is sweet revenge for the Glenn Davis trade. Yes we still remember that one. How bad will you feel if Patton turns into a #2-3 starter and Tejada is gone next year after stealing $20,000,000 of your dollars, bringing awful National attention for lying to Congress and being 2? years older than assumed? Fear MacPhail. Hide the women and children.(and the prospects!)
I can already see Tejada out of an Astros uni by next season and Patton becoming a legit middle of the rotation guy...Its going to be hard to be a Stros fan this season.
Yeah, This is pretty ridiculous. I knew that trading for Tejada was a big mistake man. The reason why i think he came to Houston was because Ed wade believed in him and thought that he might do a lot better if he moved somewhere else. He did not have a bad season with the orioles. I mean yes, he did have a .296 batting average with like 18 home runs i believe (wasn't he the mvp?)...Yes, for a while he was looking very good with the Astros. In may he had a .329 batting average, 6 home runs, and 37 RBI's...Then.....He started choking. Wade thought he would do more for us, when in reality, he ended up hurting the astros pretty bad.
Luke scott had an average season with the orioles batting .257, 23 home runs and 65 RBI's. He had one stand out season with the astros which was in 2005 i believe where he batted over a .350 avg..
Matt Albers in my opinion did okay this past season. I mean he went 3-3 with a 3.49 ERA. I hear he skipped surgery to try and rehab his shoulder, and looks like he will still be working the bullpen this season also.
Troy went 0-2 last season and went through serious shoulder surgery. They are saying that troy could surprise a lot of people, but we will just have to see what happens.
Ty Wigginton had a pretty good season batting.285 with 23 home runs and 58 RBI's. He has his days, but when he is hot...he is hot and there is no stopping him. The truth is that even though wiggy is a great versatile player, his defense is not as great as it should be.
With all that said... When i saw the astro's get whooped on by luke, ty, and huff, it pissed me off because they were all astros.
Everyone who leaves the astro's does a lot better. Mike hampton, brad lidge (won the world series), scott, huff, and ty.
I dont know about the rest of you.... but i think we should get rid of brandon backe...He ranks 4th in the league in losing games!!!! (14) i am sorry... but i think he blows! he has not done anything and i think it would be great to trade him and a few players for someone else....with that being said.. i am sure once he leaves he will be a great player just like brad.... Astro's just have bad luck when it comes to trades and it sucks.
TEJADA.....See you later and thanks for basically stealing the astros money!
Hope he is gone.
Nice blog Jake, I know they gave a lot for a guy who's even older then they thought, but on the other side all the 'Stros agree that Miggy brings a lot to the clubhouse(steroid issue aside, he threw them away anyway right??). And even though he does not have the range he once had I don't think anyone can argue that Miggy didn't contribute to the team having the best defense in baseball last season. A fact thats going to come into play again this season as we are going to have to rely on making plays, instead of counting on strikeouts. I think if he can bring his slugging up this year, it may not completely validate the trade, but certainly go a long way to breaking even. Just my two cents man keep up the good work.
